Director’s Message

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to our website. We hope that it will provide you with an overview of the work and scope of the foundation and serve to introduce you to celebrated New Brunswick artists. I share with you some highlights of the Foundation’s work this year

In May, 2009, the Foundation was pleased to award the $15,000 Strathbutler to David Ulmholtz and the $2000 Nel Oudemans Prize to Kristyn Cooper. As is the tradition of the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation, the winners of these awards are feted at a gala event. It has been our privilege to have had The Honourable Herménégilde Chiasson present these awards for the last five years. The Foundation would like to thank His Honour for abiding support of the Foundation and to commend his role in promoting the arts throughout his tenure as Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick.

Based on the recommendations of the scholarship jury, Fred Ross and Herzl Kashetsky, the Foundation doubled its scholarship giving in 2009 to support two impressive students, Brandon Hunter and Jae Hynn Daniel Roh. Zachary Hayward is a second year recipient of the Fred Ross Scholarship. The Foundation salutes the progress of these fine young talents.

The Foundation participated and supported two significant New Brunswick arts events in 2009, The Fred Ross Tribute Gala and the 50th anniversary of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.

Continuing our commitment to establishing a permanent art collection by Strathbutler winners at the New Brunswick Museum, we worked in concert with Canada Council to acquire works by Brigitte Clavette, Dan Steeves and Anna Torma.

We look forward to an exhibition of these works soon.
